The Servant of Two Masters, by Carlo Goldoni

This hilarious comedy of misunderstandings focuses on mismatched lovers and their troublesome servants. Clarice loves Silvio; when Beatrice shows up disguised as her brother Federigo, Clarice's former fiancé, the course of true love is unexpectedly strewn with obstacles. Scott Malia directs this classic farce by Goldoni, a reworking of themes from commedia dell' arte, Italy's distinctive brand of improvisational comedy.

Phoolan Devi was an iconic figure in modern India whose journey from child bride to bandit queen to politician, assassinated in 2001 at the age of 37 was unprecedented. Shirish Korde and Lynn Kremer's multi-media opera dramatizes the life of a woman who achieved near mythical status in her own lifetime. The musicians of the Boston Musica Viva, under the direction of Richard Pittman, are joined by the Pakistani-Canadian soprano Zorano Sadiq (as Phoolan), master tabla artist Maditya Kalyanpur, and an ensemble of Holy Cross students.

Cherry Orchard
By Anton Chekhov
In the early days of the twentieth century, a bankrupt aristocrat returns to her childhood home in the Russian countryside, where she is powerless to stop progress and recapture the gracious life she once lived there. All the great Chekhov themes ~ the decline of the nobility, the nature of loss, unrequited love, the inexorable march of time ~ converge in his final masterpiece. Steve Vineberg directs this poignant and sometimes hilarious tragicomedy, one of the great works of the modern theatre.

Fall 2008

In this rarely performed Shakespearean romance, a good man undeservedly loses both his wife and his daughter to the vagaries of nature and the evil of men. Devastated and altered by grief, he faces a tragic end until his fortunes are miraculously reversed. Pericles is a fairy tale about suffering and redemption that features shipwrecks, pirates, incest, corruption, an evil queen, supernatural figures and resurrections. It requires the audience to surrender cynicism and judgment and embrace the transformative possibilities of the magical and the mystical. Edward Isser directs.
