Getting Started
Steps to Studying Abroad
Step 1: Apply for a passport, or get your current passport renewed if it will be expiring before December 31, 2013. Your passport must be valid through December of 2013 for all programs. Your application will not be reviewed if your passport does not meet this criterion. For passport information, go to:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
Step 2: Attend the Study Abroad Fair, Tuesday, September 13, 2011 from 4:30-6:00 pm in the Hogan Ballroom. Study Abroad ambassadors will share their experiences, photos, memorabilia, and answer any questions you may have.
Step 3: Attend the Study Abroad General Information Session on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Hogan Ballroom.
Step 4: Investigate Programs - Attend Study Abroad program information sessions scheduled throughout September and October (see the Information Session Schedule link below). Look through the materials in the Study Abroad Resource Room, located in Smith 215, and make an appointment to speak with a director in the Study Abroad office. Decide on your first and second choices based on your interests, academic goals and eligibility.
Step 5: Talk to your advisor before making a top choice - Consult with your Study Abroad Advisor, your major, minor or concentration advisor and a Study Abroad director about your study abroad goals, coursework and programs that best meet your academic goals.
Questions to Consider When Choosing a Program
Step 6: Complete your application - Work with your advisor and a Study Abroad director to develop your goals and priorities for your coursework, co- and extra-curricular activities abroad. The course choices, as well as your goals, will comprise your application essay. remember, your application should be complete and neat, but it is a first draft and a process we work through together. Although the application is competitive, nothing is set in stone, and we will help you get abroad!
Step 7: Submit your complete application to the Study Abroad Office, located in Smith 212. Applications for Trinity College and Oxford are due on Friday, November 4, 2011; all other semester and academic year applications are due on Friday, November 11, 2011.
