What's Happening

The Main Event

Old Masters: Copies and Catholic Culture at Holy Cross illustrates the role of the Renaissance copy in 19th and early 20th century America. During this period, new Catholic immigrants displayed copies of Renaissance masterpieces, such as those seen in this exhibit, as a response to cultural alienation and ethnic discrimination. This exhibit was curated by Mallory Zeising, Visual Arts major, class of 2007. Visitors may see the exhibit on the second floor of Dinand Library during normal library hours.

The Opening Act

Colorful Holy Cross.  When looking out the windows on fields of snow and ice it is often easy to forget that Mt. St. James is a vibrantly beautiful place during the rest of the year.  Thus we felt that it was time to provide the college community with a reminder of the colors that fill the Holy Cross College landscape during the spring, summer and fall.  It is our hope that this exhibit will encourage the weather to turn warm and that the colors in the case will melt away your winter blues. This exhibit was curated by Assistant Archivist Sarah Campbell and Archival Assistant Susan Selby and can be seen in Dinand Library's Main Reading Room during normal library hours.

Fraternity: The BSU Walkout. On December 10, 1969 members of the Radical Student Union and Black Student Union blocked General Electric recruiters from holding student interviews in the Hogan Ballroom.  Of the 76 students present only 16 people were identified and expelled for violating the open campus policy.  70% of those expelled were black.  The GE Protest was the initial event that led to the Black Student Union Walkout. While many members of the BSU played an important role in the events of December 12, 1969, Diane Brady, author of Fraternity, chose to focus on the stories of five men: the Honorable Clarence Thomas who currently serves as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; Attorneys Theodore Wells and Edward Jenkins; Investment Banker Stanley Grayson; and Pulitzer Award winning author Edward P. Jones and their relationship with Rev. John Brooks, S.J. President Emeritus of Holy Cross.  Their contributions to the black cause at Holy Cross as well as their contributions to American Society following their graduation truly make them worthy of study.  This exhibit includes photographs, documents and publications pulled from the Holy Cross Archives that both tell the story of the BSU walkout and highligh the careers of these men at Holy Cross and Post Graduation. This exhibit was curated by Assistant Archivist Sarah Campbell and Archival Assistant Susan Selby and can be seen in Dinand Library's Main Reading Room during normal library hours

The Entr'acte

Jesuit Heritage on Catalog Covers.  Jesuit communities and apostolic works are organized by provinces.  Each province publishes an annual Catalogus Provinciarum, a catalog or directory of the Jeusits residing in that province.  The New England Province Archives holds a collection of more than 125 linear feet of catalogs.  Using the cover illustrations on province catalogs, the exhibit presents a glimpse of the heritage of the Society of Jesus.  The exhibit features an explanation of the monogram and motto of the Society of Jesus as well as an illustrated biographical sketch of the founder, Ignatius of Loyola. The exhibit is curated by Alice Howe, Curator of Collections for the New England Jesuit Province Archives. It can be viewed in the College Archives Reading Room, 3rd floor, Dinand Library, 8:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.

Putting a Face to the Place. Have you ever wondered who your dorm was named for?  Have you wondered who was memorialized by the places where you eat your meals, take classes or work out?  Putting a Face to the Place identifies these men and women using photographs drawn from the Holy Cross Photo Collection. Curated by Sarah Campbell, Assistant Archivist and Susan Selby, Archival Assistant, this exhibit can be viewed in the College Archives Reading Room, 3rd floor, Dinand Library, 8:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.
