Noyce Scholars Program
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program at Holy Cross is supported by the National Science Foundation. The goal is to encourage talented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to become middle- and secondary-school teachers in these disciplines.
The project has two components:
1. Noyce Tutors
First- and second-year students have opportunities to serve as paid tutors and mentors for children learning science and mathematics in public and private schools in Worcester.
> Who should apply?
First- and second-year students who are majors or are thinking about majoring in science or mathematics, and who want to obtain first-hand experience in teaching children.
> How to apply
Complete an application and submit a personal statement of interest and their high school and college transcripts to the Holy Cross Department of Education.
2. Noyce Scholarships
Holy Cross STEM majors who decide to pursue teaching careers are eligible to apply for a Noyce scholarship. Noyce Scholars are awarded $19,000 per year in their junior and senior years toward their college tuition. Upon completion of their Holy Cross degree, recipients must commit to teaching in high-need school districts for two years for every year of scholarship support they received. Twenty students will receive these awards over the five-year span of the grant program.
> Who should apply?
Rising third- and fourth-year students who have declared a major in biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics and have been accepted into the Holy Cross Teacher Education Program.
> How to apply
Students submit an application describing their interests and experiences in teaching, a transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and show high achievement in their mathematics and science courses. Consideration will be given to financial need. Applications will be due to the Holy Cross Department of Education in March and awards will be announced in April.
> Where to apply
All application materials are available in the Holy Cross Department of Education, Stein Hall 443, Phone: 508-793-3556.
