National Student Essay Contest - The Elie Weisel Prize in Ethics
The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today's complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues and are rational arguments for ethical action. Full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States are welcome to enter the Essay Contest.
Funding for Exploring Vocations in Ministry
The Fund for Theological Education, a national program that collaborates with the College's Lilly Vocation Discernment Initiative, has support funds available for students interested in pursuing ministry in any of the Christian churches. The Undergraduate Fellows Program offers a summer conference on ministry, and which includes a $1,500 stipend to apply toward educational costs or further exploration of ministry. It is open to current sophomores and juniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0. More information is available at www.fteleaders.org. Deadline for applications is March 15.
Faculty Opportunities:
Collegium: A Colloquy on Faith and Intellectual Life
Collegium sponsors annual summer colloquies for faculty from its 60 member schools, and for graduate students who apply for fellowships. Collegium is particularly designed to welcome new faculty and faculty who are not Catholic into reflection about their own vocation as intellectuals of various faith commitments at Catholic institutions. The colloquies have gained a wide reputation for being both intellectually stimulating and spiritually refreshing. Holy Cross faculty have attended for 10 years. Ignatian Pilgrimage
The College of the Holy Cross organizes an annual pilgrimage for faculty through Northern Spain and to Rome to visit important sites in the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.
Lilly Fellows Program
The Lilly Fellows Program Network of Colleges and Universities includes a wide range of church-related institutions participating in a national conversation about the nature of the Christian academic vocation and the future of church-related higher education. A variety of annual national, regional, and specialized conferences benefit faculty and students from its member institutions. Mathew Schmalz, Holy Cross religious studies professor, is a member of the LFP's National Network Board.
Seminars in Christian Scholarship
The Seminars in Christian Scholarship program, sponsored by Calvin College, seeks to promote high quality scholarship that reflects a Christian perspective by encouraging Christian scholars to pursue current research topics in their disciplines.
