Scholarships
The Department of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross offers competitive merit-based scholarships to outstanding high school graduates who will major in the Classics at Holy Cross. Each year we award two Rev. Henry Bean, S.J., Scholarships, which are four-year, full-tuition, merit-based scholarships. Every four years, including this one, the Department awards one Rev. William FitzGerald, S.J., Scholarship, a four-year, full- tuition, merit-based scholarship. A FitzGerald Scholarship will be awarded this year to a student entering the Class of 2016. Candidates for both scholarships are expected to have a strong background in Latin and/or Greek, and significant academic achievement in all other subjects, especially on standardized tests. Each scholarship is renewable annually, provided that the student maintains a strong academic record and continues to be a highly visible Classics major. Joining the ranks of more than seventy Classics majors at Holy Cross, Bean and FitzGerald scholars work closely with professors who are dedicated to the teaching of undergraduates. Bean and FitzGerald scholars take a minimum of 14 courses in Classics. Past scholars have gone on to successful careers in the Classics, medicine, law, business, education, and technology. A visit to Holy Cross is not a requirement, but applicants are strongly encouraged to arrange for an interview by phone, online, or in person. Applications are due January 18; candidates may schedule a visit as late as January 31. Candidates need not specify whether they are applying for one of the Bean Scholarships or the FitzGerald Scholarship. Decisions for all three Scholarships will be made in late February, at which time awardees will be asked to accept or decline in a timely fashion.
In addition to the application materials required by the Holy Cross Office of Admissions, applicants for Bean and FitzGerald Classics Scholarships must also send to the Chair, Department of Classics:
