Holy Cross is one of the nation's top producers of chemistry graduates certified by the American Chemical Society. The curriculum combines a solid background in fundamental principles and theories of chemistry with hands-on experience using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
The chemistry department takes a guided inquiry approach to introductory courses in general and organic chemistry. Through this method, students first encounter fundamental concepts in the laboratory. They follow up with discussion and further elaboration on those concepts during the lecture portion of the course.
Undergraduate research is strongly encouraged for those majors interested in pursuing an advanced degree in chemistry. The department offers qualified students an opportunity to conduct research in association with faculty members for academic credit. In addition, summer research positions are available on a competitive basis. As of result of these opportunities, Holy Cross undergraduates regularly contribute papers to professional science publications.
