About the Center

Mission

The Center for Teaching at the College of the Holy Cross is dedicated to supporting engaged and effective teachers in the Jesuit tradition of fostering academic excellence and the development of the whole student. The Center responds to the needs and concerns of the faculty, facilitating open and frank discussions on teaching and learning.  The Center’s initiatives help faculty adapt to the ever changing educational environment.

Activities

The Center for Teaching realizes this mission by supporting faculty teaching at all career stages, providing teaching resources (especially for new faculty), and encouraging scholarship on teaching. The Center:

  • Organizes workshops, lunch discussions, and other forums for faculty to reflect on their teaching and curriculum
  • Supports grants for faculty to develop new courses and/or teaching strategies
  • Supports funding for faculty to attend teaching conferences, workshops, and institutes
  • Collaborates on projects to develop teaching with:
    • Educational Technology
    • Donelan Office of Community Based Learning
    • Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies
    • Academic Services and Learning Resources
    • Center for Religion Ethics and Culture
    • Deans' Office
    • College academic departments and programs
    • Holy Cross Libraries

Administration

The Center for Teaching is directed by a tenured faculty member (the Director of the Center for Teaching), in consultation with a Center for Teaching Advisory Board. The Director is appointed by the Dean of the College to a three-year, renewable term at the recommendation of the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and the CT Advisory Board. The Director reports to the Associate Dean for Faculty Development. To successfully run the Center, the Director is granted a 2-course reduction/year and will work closely with the Center's Program Coordinator. The Director's office is located in Dinand Library, adjacent to Dinand 210, home of the Center for Teaching. The Advisory Board (made up of 5 tenured/tenure-track faculty members) is appointed by the Director of the Center for Teaching in consultation with the Dean of the College and the Associate Dean for Faculty Development. It is planned that the Board include at least one faculty member from each academic division of the College. Advisory Board members will serve staggered, 2-year terms. The Director and the Advisory Board routinely work in consulation with other related offices and programs on campus such as Educational Technology, Donelan Office of Community Based Learning, Academic Services and Learning Resources, and the McFarland Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture.

Center History

The Center for Teaching was established in 2010 with a three-year grant from the Andrew T. Mellon Foundation. The Center was developed under the stewardship of Amy Wolfson, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Professor of Psychology. Dean Wolfson and first Director of the Center, with an initial advisory board of Susan Amatangelo, Associate Professor of Italian; Patricia L. Bizzell, Professor of English and the John E. Brooks, S.J., Professor in the Humanities; Edward T. O'Donnell, Associate Professor of History and Cristi Rinklin, Associate Professor of Visual Arts. This board formulated the Mission and first programming for the Center. These first programs have developed into several core elements of the Center, such as the pre-semester workshops, brown-bag lunches, and additional ad hoc programs and events. The Board also developed the administrative plan for the continuation of the Center with College support at the conclusion of the founding Mellon grant.
